Artistic Freedom Under Fire: The Kennedy Center Controversy Deepens
In a move that has sparked intense debate, the renowned composer of the blockbuster musical Wicked, Stephen Schwartz, has joined a growing list of artists boycotting the Kennedy Center. The reason? A controversial decision by the center’s board to rename the institution after former U.S. President Donald Trump. But here’s where it gets even more contentious: Schwartz, an Oscar and Grammy-winning artist, declared that performing at the center now feels like making an ideological statement—something he refuses to do. And this is the part most people miss: the center’s president, Richard Grenell, has vehemently denied Schwartz’s claims, calling them “totally bogus” and insisting the composer was never officially booked for the event in question.
Schwartz, 77, explained in a statement that he initially agreed to participate in a May gala at the request of the Washington National Opera’s artistic director. However, after months of silence, he assumed the event had been canceled. Grenell, however, fired back on social media, accusing “woke high school reporters” of spreading misinformation. He claimed Schwartz was never officially scheduled to appear and pointed out that the composer himself admitted to receiving no updates since February. Schwartz isn’t alone in his protest. Earlier this week, two other acts—The Cookers, a legendary jazz band, and Doug Varone and Dancers—canceled their performances at the center. While The Cookers avoided mentioning Trump or the name change in their statement, Doug Varone and Dancers were explicit: “We can no longer support an institution that has strayed so far from its original mission,” they said. Grenell dismissed these cancellations as “derangement syndrome,” further fueling the controversy.
This isn’t the first time the name change has caused upheaval. Jazz percussionist Chuck Redd previously canceled his annual Christmas Eve gig at the center, prompting Grenell to label it a “political stunt” and threaten a $1 million lawsuit. The decision to rename the center—now officially the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts—was made in December by a board largely appointed by Trump himself. New signage appeared almost immediately, sparking outrage among lawmakers, legal scholars, and even members of the Kennedy family.
Joe Kennedy III, a former U.S. Representative and grandnephew of President John F. Kennedy, condemned the move, stating, “This is a living memorial to a fallen president, established by federal law. Renaming it is like trying to rename the Lincoln Memorial—it’s simply not within their authority.” Legal experts argue that any name change requires congressional approval, as the center’s original name was enshrined in a 1964 law.
